Athlete’s Cookbook: Episode 1—Why Lauren Fisher Eats “Baby Food” | Nike

– So, James, what is the
difference between Paleo and Keto? – You’re not going to
introduce the whole segment? You’re just going to jump into the trivia? Hey, this is Lauren, and
we’re doing CrossFit trivia. – Hey, so this is Lauren, and we’re doing CrossFit
trivia with James today. – I’m James Davis, and I’m an
actor, comedian, and writer. I never thought much about eating healthy until my body let me know, hey, sucka it’s time to think about eating healthy! I’m trying to get these swole. I want disrespectful shoulders. That’s me breathing
while doing the exercise. But I feel like it’s not enough. Now I’m on a mission to learn how the best athletes in the
world fuel their training with healthy, simple food. How do I make it so that all
my food goes to my muscles? – You need to start training. – [James] I need to know
recipes that will help me perform at my best. Because it turns out,
every job is like a sport. And every meal counts. Today, I’m meeting with Lauren Fisher. Out of high school, she made
top 10 in the CrossFit games. She’s been killing it since 2014. She’s a beast. – [Woman In Crowd] Come on, Lauren! She weighs 135 and can
deadlift 380 pounds. This is 20 pounds, and
I feel dead lifting it. I gotta know her secrets. Oh. – [Lauren] Another miss. How many times are you
gonna keep missing, James? I really thought your golf game
was a lot better than this. – Your best two putts
against my best two putts. – All right, let’s do it. – Uh-oh, bank putt. – [Lauren] Two. – [James] You’re good. – [Lauren] You need to make this in. Off, again. – [James] What do we have here? – Today we’re gonna be
making eggs and oatmeal. – Together? – Eggs inside the oatmeal. – Mmm. That’s different. – [Lauren] Before I train
every single day, I eat this. – Now I’m listening. – It’s really easy to
digest, it’s high in protein, high in carbs, a little
bit lower on the fat, but it tastes really good and it’s gonna help me feel
good for my training session. We don’t need the oven
mitt to start this, though. – I just stay ready. – So we have oats right
here, vanilla protein powder, eggs, cinnamon, blueberries, and bananas. We’re doing four egg whites in here and then two whole eggs with the egg yolk. – [James] Sometimes in the morning, I’ll have two and a half eggs. – Oh, really? – Yeah. – So then you know how to do that. – Yeah, watch, boom. Here we, uh-oh, wait a minute, uh-oh. – Oh, fancy. – Stay in your home. Stay in your home. – Okay, maybe I’m gonna
give you that job, then. – [James] Oh, uh-oh. Wait, you need an official
name for this dish. – It’s called eggs and oatmeal. – No, that’s what it is. – Uh, banana oats. – I bet you squat better than you name. – [Lauren] All right, I think
those eggs are good now. So then we’re gonna turn
on the oven to medium heat. We’re gonna take the
oats and then bananas. Do you wanna add the blueberries in? – [James] Yes, I do want
to add the blueberries in. – And then just enough
water to cover the oats. – That looks very thick. It’s not gonna flow through you. Some things you eat and
it’s out, it’s out of there. Real fast. That’s gonna hang out for a little bit. – No, it’s almost like baby food. So baby food I think just goes
straight through your system. And this is very similar to that. – Okay, so we’re making baby food. That’s what you should call it. – Baby food? – Baby food! – Baby food. – Baby food. – Baby food. – Baby food. Only the real athletes
know about baby food! James, why you bench-pressing so much? ‘Cause I had my baby food! – What is an EMOM? – An Internet mom. – What is a Tabata? – Tabata. I know what a ciabatta is. So it’s something related. Next! So how did you get started in CrossFit? ‘Cause I hear you weren’t
even done in high school. I started CrossFit when I was 14. – Okay. – And I played basketball at the time, so I wanted kind of an extra strength and conditioning program. I started doing CrossFit. My coach was like, “Lauren, you
could be really good at this “like you can be one of these
girls in the CrossFit Games.” I went into that year just
wanting to have fun with it. And I ended up placing
ninth in the whole world. If I didn’t eat right, I
wouldn’t be able to perform at the level I do. When I was a kid, I enjoyed
candy, I enjoyed fast food, and I’ve just never really
known how much nutrition plays a huge role in how you compete. – And how does making meals like this, how does that fit into your preparation? – I eat over 3,000 calories
and I weigh, like, 135 pounds. – So, and all that just
goes to performance? – Straight to my muscles. – How do I make it so that all
my food goes to my muscles? – You need to start training. – Ha! Besides that, is there any other…? – I think timing of your nutrients. I think a lot of people
don’t get it right. They don’t eat the right
amount of nutrients before their training session. – ‘Cause sometimes, I be working out and I feel empty inside
’cause I haven’t eaten. – Yeah. – Enough. – I think if you had this
before your training session, you wouldn’t feel hungry. Aw! Why are you moving so slow, James? – Why are you moving so fast?! Oh my gosh! Why are you so fast?! – [Lauren] Good job. – [James] I feel like
it’s a good consistency. – [Lauren] Yeah. – And you know, with
these forearm muscles, I’m able to get in here a little stronger. – Now we’re gonna do the
eggs inside the oats. Here’s where the magic happens. I promise, it’s gonna
turn into an oatmeal form. And I think these oats
are pretty much done. Add vanilla protein and cinnamon. So then we’re gonna add a
little bit of heavy cream to drizzle over the top. Maple syrup, too. – Well, you know what? This baby food looks pretty good. – Good job. – Aye. I’m one step closer to CrossFit, right? – Yeah, you are. – One baby step. What is your general
feeling on women’s nutrition and women’s exercise? – I want to show that functional fitness can be approachable for women. Like, you could do high-intensity
training and strength and you’re gonna get stronger
and it’s gonna carry over to everything in life, mentally,
physically, and emotionally. – Have you yourself ever had to, you know, check yourself, or found
yourself, like, comparing your body or feeling like you should
look a certain different way as an athlete? – Well, in high school, so
that was, like, my hardest period in life. That’s when a lot of
the guys made fun of me. I was kind of, like, the muscular girl and they used to even
say I was on steroids. Called me the CrossFit girl. And that was, like, a period of my life where I was like, I’m
not gonna listen to them. I’m gonna keep doing
CrossFit and lifting weights and getting stronger ’cause I have this goal to
go to the CrossFit Games and I was gonna follow that. – I feel very educated and also, I got me a nice,
solid, pre-workout meal. Or post-workout. – Yep. – Imma take this recipe. Imma steal it. Imma tell people I came up with it. The name and everything. If you hear somebody talking about James’ famous adult baby food, chill out. It’s an inside secret. Let me have my moment, okay? I got nutritional advice from you, but I would like to perhaps do something a little bit more physical. – What do you say about a
game of basketball-slash-workout? – Let’s do it! Let’s do some, fitness me out! I know that I’m doing my best, but I know there is
more that I can be doing and I want to learn that. – You practiced before this. – Of course I did. – I’m gonna do the 35 pounds. – Woo-hoo! – Hike it up and snatch it over your head. Yep. – This works what? – This works your shoulders,
hamstrings, low back. I don’t think everyone
needs a nutritionist, but I think kinda
understanding what to eat and what not to eat. I want women to understand that it’s about how you feel on the inside. As long as you feel happy and satisfied, then it’s not all about the looks. – [James] When you know that
you’re eating the right thing, mentally you just feel more confident. Thank you so much! – Yeah. – You know what? I feel like I didn’t eat enough. – You didn’t eat enough oats? – Oats. – You wanna go finish that off? – Yeah. – Let’s go finish it off. – I didn’t eat enough eggs. I don’t think I got enough
macro proteins in my abdomen. – What is a Metcon? – Metcon? Metcon, that’s where all the Mets fans meet up in New York to have
a convention of sadness. Click here to subscribe to the channel.
